They Don’t Have to be Glossy! Mattifying your Nails with Matte Nail Polish!
It’s not all about the shine nowadays, haven’t you heard? Matte is “in”! Why is matte nail polish becoming so popular? One reason- it’s unique. I mean, when was the last time you ran into someone with matte nails? Glossy nails? Sure, yeah everyone has those but matte nails? Not so much! We have gel nails to turn to if we want glossy, but what if we want matte nails? Matte nail polish? Matte top coats? In this article, we’ll be going over the many different ways of achieving that matte nail polish effect. ?
Option 1: Applying Matte Nail Polish Directly
The simplest, and easiest way to achieve matte nails would be of course, to apply matte nail polish directly onto your nails. But the thing is, matte nail polish can be harder to come by- look around the nail care section next time you’re at the store, chances are, you won’t find any. They’re just not as common as your regular glossy nail polishes! But not to worry, Amazon carries many matte nail polish brands. ?
Let’s go over some of the brands that have matte nail polish:
Zoya Matte Nail Polish
Zoya’s Matte Velvet collection features 6 of the best-selling matte nail polish shades. Ranging from purple to white, their formulation promises a truly stylish matte finish. All the colour, but none of the shine! The good thing about matte nail polish is that you never have to worry about having to apply a topcoat- just apply a couple layers of the nail polish and you’re done!
Kleancolor Mighty Gadget Matte Nail Polish
Kleancolor offers affordable matte nail polish for cost conscious lacqueristas- how’s $11 for a set of 12? Great assortment of colours too! In addition to regular opaque matte nail polish, they also have beautiful metallic matte colours- perfect for those who find solid matte colours just a tad plain!
Essie Cashmere Matte Nail Polish
You’re probably thinking, “finally a brand that I recognize!” Essie does indeed have its own line of matte nail polish. The Cashmere Matte line is created with reflective micro-pearls and has a soft-spun effect to provide just the right amount of soft matte. Their luxurious neutral matte nail polish colours are inspired by the colours of rich cashmere. Super pretty!
Should you apply a top coat to matte nail polish?
Most of the matte nail polish available are not formulated to be used with traditional top coats. Think about it, if you were to apply a layer of top coat onto your matte nails, you’d essentially be covering them with a layer of gloss- seems pretty counterintuitive right? So leave your bottle of top coat aside people, you won’t be needing it as far as matte nails are concerned!
⚠️TLDR; No, you do not have to apply a top coat with most kinds of matte nail polish.
Option 2: Matte Top Coats
Wondering why the big nail polish names (think Opi, China Glaze, etc) don’t have their own lines of matte nail polish? Well actually, in fact they kind of do. See, to achieve matte nails, the other option is to apply a matte top coat on top of regular nail polish. In fact, it’s probably the easiest way to get matte nails- just apply a layer of it on top and you’re done! Another good thing about matte top coats is the fact that they also help to protect the nail colour underneath (In contrast, matte nail polish tend to chip faster without the top coat protection).
Most if not all of the big nail polish companies have their own version of a matte top coat. Ultimately, they all do the same thing- they act to “mattify” the color underneath. In terms of brand, Essie’s Matte About You is probably one of the more well known ones out there- it’s affordable and works well! ? Other popular matte nail polish top coats include: Opi Matte Top Coat, Revlon Transforming Effects Matte Top Coat, NYC Matte Me Crazy Top Coat (All of which are available on Amazon for your convenience!).
