The Best Nail Polish Rack

Choosing the Best Nail Polish Rack

Love Nail Polish but Hate Clutter? This Buying Guide Is Here to Help. Read on to Learn All About the Different Types of Nail Polish Rack Storage Solutions.

If you’re a nail polish lover (and let’s face it – who isn’t), then you need some way to store all the different colors and brands you probably have. If you’re like me, then you might just have bottles of nail polish stuffed haphazardly into a medicine cabinet or lying around on the countertop. I’m embarrassed to admit just how disorganized my collection is. Have you ever seen that meme that makes fun of women for having cosmetics strewn all around the sink and then nagging their husbands for forgetting to put the toilet seat down? Yeah, that’s me. It’s ironic, I know.

nail polish clutter

Clutter, Clutter, Everywhere!

Anyway, I was starting to get fed up with my own mess, and I wanted to figure out a different solution. I could probably fit all the bottles in the medicine cabinet, but then where would all the medicine and first aid stuff go? No, I needed a dedicated storage solution. I decided to investigate all of the different options, and now you get to benefit from my obsessive research.

If you’re a cosmetologist or other beauty professional, then you probably already own a nail polish rack of some sort. But if you’re just starting out in the beauty business or are opening a salon, you might be looking for the right storage device. Or you might just be looking to upgrade to a larger or higher-quality rack. Either way, I’ve got you covered. Some of the racks on this list will work very well for professional use.

On the other hand, you might just be a recreational polish lover. That’s fine too, and that happens to be the category that I fit into. I’ve compiled a comprehensive list of nail polish holders, and I’m sure something here will fit your needs. If nothing I suggest quite matches your unique sense of style, you should check out the DIY solutions I have found. I’m something of a DIYer myself, and it’s always nice to be able to devise a solution that both meets your needs and is totally customized.

Why Purchase a Nail Polish Rack?

By now you’re either totally sold on the idea of a nail polish organizer or you’re asking yourself if this is really something you need. If you’re in the latter camp, I totally understand. I hate making frivolous purchases, and I’m not a big fan of paying for stuff to organize other stuff. Maybe that’s why my house is so messy. But I digress. If you’re unsure about whether a nail polish rack is right for you, here are some of the advantages of a purpose-built system of nail polish organization:

If you are in the beauty business, then you probably already know why you need a nail polish rack. These are essential tools for nail artists. Pretty much every nail salon has several substantial wall racks filled with polish, and there is normally some sort of nail polish organizer at each individual station as well. Quality and capacity are especially important issues for professional nail artists. I’ve included some picks that will work for pros, as well as some that should be good for either professional or home use. Nail salons tend to shell out big bucks for high-end storage solutions, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get a long-lasting, professional-quality storage system for a reasonable amount of money.

Any nail polish storage solution can be a decorating solution as well. What was once a mess can be turned into a piece of art. Maybe that seems a little hyperbolic, but it’s true. Just imagine all those bottles of polish shoved inside a drawer. Not very aesthetically pleasing, is it? Now imagine those same bottles set up on a rack in a manner of your choosing. You can arrange the colors any way you want. Would you like them displayed like the colors of the rainbow? Great! Just remember ROYGBIV. Want to get creative and go two light colors followed by two dark colors in a repeating pattern? Make it happen! Heck, if you have a wall rack and some artistic talent, you can even turn your nail polish bottles into a picture. Make your own masterpiece!

If you’re like me and you aren’t an artist, you can still make use of the functionality of a nail polish organizer. It might seem like a Ziploc bag or a Tupperware container is good enough, but it is a hassle to find the color you want in that mess. Setting up your collection in an accessible manner is priceless but can be done for as little or as much money as you want. And if none of the following suggestions appeal to you, there are some great DIY options at the end. It’s not about how much money you spend; it’s about turning something you enjoy that creates clutter into something you love and love looking at.

Finding the Storage Solution to Fit Your Needs

A nail polish rack seems like such a simple thing, but there are actually a lot of options in terms of design, capacity, and material, not to mention quality.

Common Nail Polish Rack Materials

Acrylic nail polish racks are versatile, lightweight, easy to clean, and normally fairly inexpensive. Countertop displays are often made of acrylic, and you can easily find an acrylic organizer at just about any big-box store. You can get a simple countertop organizer for as little as $5, but most models will cost you between $10 and $30 dollars. Many are made to sit on a flat surface, but there are also some wall-mount acrylic organizers. The wall-mount ones are kind of cool because they give the appearance of floating bottles, and you can see all of each bottle without having to remove them.

One downside of acrylic is that it can crack. Different models have different thickness, and many of the cheapest ones tend to be pretty flimsy. If you just want the least expensive option though, I’d say go for it. It’s certainly better than letting your nail polish lie around haphazardly. However, in my opinion, acrylic just doesn’t look as nice as metal or wood. Others may disagree, but I find that this material shows every smudge despite being easy to clean. I prefer a material that doesn’t need frequent cleaning to look nice.

If you’re a beauty professional, then an acrylic countertop nail polish display rack is a good choice for keeping an array of polishes close at hand. Salons clean all their surfaces frequently anyway, so smudges, dirt, and grime will be less of an issue than it might be in a home. For many nail artists, a small acrylic display is a secondary storage solution, with the majority of the polishes being stored in a large wall rack (often made of acrylic as well).

Other common materials for nail polish racks include metal and wood. The metal ones are really common for midsize home polish organizers. Metal is usually a bit sturdier than acrylic, but it depends on the type and thickness used. One big advantage of metal over acrylic is that it is more versatile in terms of design. Many metal wall and countertop racks feature attractive accents which bring an extra touch of style to your nail polish display. Wood is a less common material for polish organizers, but can be a functional and attractive option. Check out the DIY section at the end for a couple of wooden nail polish racks you can make yourself.

Types of Nail Polish Organizers

There are two major categories of nail polish organizers. The first is the countertop rack or display. These can be made of acrylic or metal and are normally constructed in a tiered configuration. There are a couple advantages to this choice. One is that these storage solutions tend to be relatively inexpensive. If you love nail polish but don’t have a gazillion bottles, this is an easy but functional option. Another advantage of a counter display is that you don’t need to put any holes in the wall. If you live in an apartment, or just aren’t handy, a simple non-mounting display is an easy way to manage your collection.

The second category of nail polish organizer is the wall-mounted rack. These are good if you have many bottles of polish (Over 40 is a good guideline), if you are a professional nail artist, or if you just like the aesthetics of a wall rack. Like countertop displays, these can be found in metal, acrylic, or even wood. If you are handy and like the wood look, you might consider a DIY wall-mounted storage solution.

There are a couple more setup options that are not quite as common, but still totally viable. One is a spinning display. This is a fun and convenient way to store a lot of bottles of polish. Unlike a wall organizer or tiered countertop display, you won’t be able to see all your bottles at a glance, but you will be able to easily locate the polish you’re looking for with a spin. And a spinning display is just cool, in my opinion.

Another less common option is a nail polish organizer case or drawer organizer. These types aren’t going to display your collection out in plain sight, so you don’t get the aesthetic pleasure of having all your polish on display. But not everyone has room to put up a wall rack or a counter display. And even if you do have room, maybe you just don’t find dozens of nail polish bottles appealing to look at. That’s fine too. Read on, and you’ll see that I recommend at least one storage solution that can be stashed away in drawers or under counters without taking up space or showing everyone your dirty secret (how many bottles you own).

Which Nail Polish Racks Made the Cut?

The selections listed here have a wide range of characteristics, and there should be at least one to fit every user’s needs. I have sought out nail polish organizers that have durable components, are easy to assemble and/or install, and are both functional and attractive. These choices are based on my own research and experience, but there are other good options out there as well. There are literally hundreds of different nail polish racks, so I have done my best to compile a list of the most versatile, value-packed, and attractive options. Whether you are a casual polish lover or a serious beauty expert, you can use the following list to understand and evaluate your options.

Top Pick

Pana Brand Nail Polish Wall Rack

Brand: Pana
Material: Metal
Type: Wall Rack
Capacity: 100
Dimensions: 21” x 25” x 1 ¾”

This wall-mounted nail polish rack by Pana is perfect for a home user or a professional. If you have the wall space for it, it will be an attractive way to display all your polish in one place. And this would look great on the wall of a salon. This organizer has a 100-bottle capacity (that’s a lot of polish!) and is available in a total of 9 different colors, including black, gold, and red. Personally, I’m digging the blue.

All of the hardware you need to mount the rack to your wall is included, but a power drill is highly recommended. Hanging it up is simple and quick, and you should be able to handle it even if you aren’t too handy. It is sturdy but lightweight, so no need to worry about the rack coming crashing down when loaded with polish.

  • Attractive
  • Reasonably priced
  • Easy to hang
  • High capacity
  • Available in 9 different colors
  • Requires installation

Brand: Home-it
Material: Acrylic
Type: Tiered counter display
Capacity: 60 bottles
Dimensions: 16 ¾” x 8” x 7 ½”

If you are looking for a value option for home use and don’t want to put holes in your walls, this countertop nail polish display rack is a very good choice. This rack by Home-it can hold up to 60 bottles, depending on brand. Keep in mind that some assembly may be required. You don’t have to be a technical genius though. It is pretty easy to put together and is made from sturdy components. It can accommodate just about any brand, size, or bottle type. This is truly one of the most practical, economical countertop polish storage solutions.

  • Sturdy, easy-clean acrylic
  • Great value
  • Good capacity for most home users
  • Accommodates most brands and bottle types/sizes
  • Some assembly needed
  • Acrylic shows smudges easily and may occasionally crack

Best for Professional Use

96 Bottle Nail Polish Wall Rack Display

Brand: Fuji
Material: Acrylic
Type: Wall Rack
Capacity: 96 bottles
Dimensions: 24” x 21” x 2”

This 6-row, clear acrylic, wall-mounted nail polish rack tops the list of best storage solutions for professional use. This is precisely the kind of rack you would expect to find on the wall of a nail salon, and for good reason. A thick, sturdy, acrylic display is simple and functional. This type of rack is easy to clean (and easy to tell when it’s dirty too), and allows customers to get a really good view of all the different polishes. You can expect to spend a little more for a professional-quality display like this one (there are even more expensive ones out there, but this is a solid, reasonably priced choice), but this is an invaluable piece of equipment for any pro. If you’re buying for home use and willing to spend a bit extra, this could work for you as well.

  • Sturdy acrylic
  • High capacity
  • Easy to clean
  • Good quality for the price
  • Overkill for many home users

The Runners Up

1) Nail Polish Holder See-Through Counter Case Polish Storage

Brand: Markartt
Material: Acrylic
Type: Carry case
Capacity: 48 bottles
Dimensions: 14 ½” x 10 ½” x 3 ¼”

If you are looking for a nail polish storage solution but don’t have counter or wall space available, the Makartt Universal Nail Polish Holder is a good alternative to countertop polish displays and wall-mounted storage racks. This organizer features adjustable dividers, room for up to 48 bottles of polish, and a convenient carry handle. You can stash it away in a cabinet or in a drawer.

  • Clear plastic for easy viewing of nail polish colors
  • Carry handle
  • Adjustable dividers
  • Fits nicely in drawer
  • Won’t take up counter or wall space
  • Acrylic can crack
  • Hinges and latches may be a weak point

2) Large Acrylic Clear Nail Polish Organizer Display Wall Rack

Brand: TMS®
Material: Acrylic
Type: Wall Rack
Capacity: 90+ bottles
Dimensions: 23 ½” x 21 ¼” x 2”

This TMS clear acrylic nail polish organizer can be mounted on the wall to hold up to 120 bottles of polish on six shelves. If you are an amateur nail polish aficionado, this could be a decent choice, but it probably isn’t sturdy enough for salon use. The advantage of a wall organizer with clear shelves is that you get a great view of all the different colors and brands in your collection. However, acrylic isn’t the most attractive option, and this particular unit costs about the same price as our top pick, which is sturdier and more visually appealing. Choose this one only if you are specifically in search of a clear acrylic wall rack.

  • High capacity (90-120 bottles)
  • Easy to see all your polish
  • Can crack
  • Shows smudges and dirt easily

Brand: Beauticom
Material: Acrylic
Type: Tiered counter display
Capacity: 36 bottles
Dimensions: 8 ¾” x 8 ¾” x 9 ¾”

Similar to the Home-it rack that is our “best bang for your buck” pick, this Beauticom organizer is a tiered countertop display, but with a smaller 36-bottle capacity. If you’re pretty sure you want a countertop organizer but don’t have anywhere near 60 bottles of polish (and can’t see yourself ever having that much), this might be your best bet. Don’t forget that some assembly is needed. The company supplies all the components and hardware, but a few customers have complained about the holes being drilled incorrectly. Most customers find the space and construction simple and sufficient. If you want an acrylic nail polish organizer, can handle minor assembly, and have a moderate amount of polish, this could be a good choice for you.

  • Easy to clean
  • Inexpensive
  • Medium capacity
  • Needs assembly
  • Can crack
  • Not the most attractive option

4) Nail Polish Rack Display Rotating Stand

Brand: Beauticom
Material: Acrylic
Type: Spinning
Capacity: 140 bottles
Dimensions: 12 x 12 x 20”

This one is a rotating nail polish display rack that can hold up to 140 bottles of polish. The major advantages of this particular organizer are the large capacity, the convenience of a rotating display (for easy access to all polish bottles), and the fact that the rack is freestanding (no need to wall mount). It can sit on the floor, but works best on a raised surface, such as a countertop.

  • Rotates for easy access
  • Super high capacity
  • Freestanding
  • Ships fully assembled
  • Moving parts can be a weak area
  • There are cheaper options

5) Sodynee Nail Polish Wall Rack

Brand: Sodynee
Material: Acrylic
Type: Wall rack
Capacity: 60 bottles
Dimensions: 15 ½” x 20” x 2”

This wall-mounted acrylic nail polish rack by Sodynee is a solid option for a wall rack. As with other acrylic racks, you get the advantage of being able to see each and every bottle and label from top to bottom, and you get the easy care, easy clean benefits of acrylic. The capacity is 60 bottles per rack, so this may not be big enough for a salon unless you plan on purchasing several, but it is a good option for home use (and possibly for professional use if you’re operating a small nail studio or can purchase in multiples). One big benefit of this particular rack is that it comes with a 100% warranty. If it cracks or breaks for any reason, you’re covered. You’re even covered if you change your mind, so there’s little risk in purchasing this rack.

  • Easy clean, easy care acrylic
  • Moderate capacity of 60 bottles
  • 100% warranty
  • Comparable options may cost the same or less
  • Acrylic is always subject to cracking or breaking (but don’t forget, it’s covered under warranty)

6) Dazone® Nail Polish Wall Rack Organizer

Brand: Dazone
Material: Metal
Type: Wall Rack
Capacity: 50 bottles
Dimensions: 15 ¾”  x 13” x 3 ½”

One cool thing about this wall-mounted metal rack by Dazone is that there is another model which is a mirror image of this one. Buy both and hang them next to each other for a nice looking 100-bottle display. You should be aware, however, that each individual rack comes in two pieces. While reasonably easy to secure to the wall, the two-piece construction is not as sturdy as the single-piece construction found in the Pana wall rack (our top pick). Buying the two mirror-image pieces to mount side-by-side will cost you over $50. For around $20 less, you can get the Pana rack, which also holds 100 bottles and is a bit better constructed. However, the Dazone rack isn’t a bad choice if you prefer the look or just want a 50-bottle organizer.

  • Available with companion piece (for separate purchase)
  • Doesn’t take up too much wall space
  • There are sturdier wall-mounted options
  • A little pricey for the capacity and build quality

Other Contenders

Of course, I have barely scratched the surface of the vast number of nail polish racks available. I’d just like to mention a few others and explain why they didn’t make the cut.

I actually really like the idea of this 2-tier metal rack that hangs from a towel bar, but the product itself fails to impress. The metal is thin and has a tendency to bend, causing the rack to hang unevenly.

COTU ® Brand Nail Polish Black Metal Desktop Display Rack

The COTU® brand metal desktop display rack holds up to 336 bottles. Most home users aren’t going to need anywhere near that capacity. Pros might be able to make use of the storage space, but nail studios normally prefer wall displays to show off their polish and free up counter space.

Gold Acrylic 60 Bottle Nail Polish Rack

This acrylic tiered counter display by MyGift® features two accessories drawers and metallic gold sides. The drawers are nice for holding cotton balls, nail files, etc., but the overall quality and construction of this rack leaves a lot to be desired. It’s not the easiest to assemble, and the acrylic isn’t terribly thick or durable.

Didn’t Find What You’re Looking for? Consider DIY.

If you’re still with me but haven’t found a nail polish storage solution that works for you, consider DIY. If you are handy, or know someone who is, you can construct your own standing or wall-mounted rack out of materials of your choosing. Here are a few ideas:

DIY 3-tiered Stand

The blogger calls this a kitchen stand, but how cute would this 3-tiered stand be for nail polish? To put this together, you’ll need an 8” cake pan, a 9” cake pan, a 10” cake pan, and two candlesticks. Glue them together, spray paint to your liking, and voila! You’ve got a unique and attractive nail polish stand.

Thrift Store Picture Frame Nail Polish Rack

I’m a huge fan of upcycling, so I was really drawn to this storage solution which is also a decorative piece. You can go treasure hunting in thrift shops and antique stores to find the perfect frame, or you can repurpose an old frame you already have on hand.

DIY Cute Nail Polish Storage Rack

Check out this informative video for instructions on how to construct your very own, totally customized, wooden wall rack. With a little wood, some basic tools, and your choice of paint or stain, you can build a nail polish storage rack of the exact capacity and dimensions to suit your needs. The rack’s designers used damask stencils, and the result is totally classy. You can copy their idea or come up with your own design to fit your décor and sense of style.

Time to Get Organizing!

There is no better feeling than taking a cluttered mess and turning it into something you enjoy looking at. For lots of women, the nail polish collection tends to be a high-clutter situation. If you’re embarrassed by your mess, take heart! You are most certainly not alone.

Why is nail polish such are hard thing to keep organized? I think it’s because of the way a collection naturally builds over time. Many ladies start out with one or two colors, then pick up others along the way. Maybe last month you only had four bottles, but one day you were strolling down the beauty aisle at your local drug store and saw a color you just couldn’t live without. And a few days later you got invited to a wedding, so you made a special trip to the store to pick out just the right color to match your dress. And heck, as long as you’re there already, you might as well pick up two bottles, or maybe even three . . .

You see where I’m going with this, don’t you? Your four-bottle collection from last month just turned into seven or eight bottles without you even realizing it. In another few months, it will probably double again.

My goal in writing this buying guide has been to help those of you who are in this situation and don’t know where to start the process of getting organized. I also wanted to offer some useful solutions for those of you who already have an extensive collection and a storage method, but are looking to change or upgrade your system of organization. Finally, I tried to give a shout-out to all the nail art professionals looking for the right organizational tools for work.

So there you have it. There are a ton of choices, but having a lot of options is part of the fun. I hope I’ve helped simplify the process of understanding and narrowing down your options.
